Dr. Rousseau has numerous scholarly works, arrangements of music, and pedagogical works to his credit, many of which have also been published in French, Japanese, and German. He is author of Marcel Mule: His Life and the Saxophone, based on interviews with his instructor at the Paris Conservatory, legendary saxophonist Marcel Mule.

Saxophone Artistry in Performance and Pedagogy. This pedagogical master work defines and describes those factors essential to achieving success in both classical and non-classical performance. As Dr. Rousseau explains, “Concepts of tone quality are, understandably, diverse, but the basic principles of saxophone tone production, are undeniably similar.” Throughout the book, Dr. Rousseau discusses a variety of saxophone topics ranging from an historical overview to tone quality, articulations, learning techniques and many other topics.  Eugene Rousseau: With Casual Brilliance

NASA is pleased to announce the second volume of the North American Saxophone Alliance Biographical Series.  Eugene Rousseau: With Casual Brilliance, written by Thomas Liley, presents the life and pedagogy of the internationally famous performer and teacher.

Thomas Liley, Director of Scholarly Publications for NASA, is co-author of The Cambridge Companion to the Saxophone and author of A Brief History of the World Saxophone Congress and numerous articles and reviews published around the world.

The book’s first principal section covers Rousseau’s life, including his Fulbright study in Paris with the legendary Marcel Mule and his decades as a professor at Indiana University and the University of Minnesota.

The second portion presents Rousseau’s approach to saxophone pedagogy, including aspects such as tone production, technique, high tones, and articulation.  Extensive appendices document his career and numerous photographs and programs illuminate his historic recitals in the world’s musical capitals.

The soft cover book is 231 pages in length and is generously illustrated.  It offers insights to the global evolution of the saxophone through the groundbreaking career of one of the most influential wind players of the past fifty years.

Available through the North American Saxophone Alliance.
